Japanese Fungi on Plants No.44 before next top

Phyllosticta cruenta (Kuntze:Fries) Kickx
Classification: Deuteromycotina, Coelomycetes

 Collected in Yamagata Pref., Tohoku Distr., the northern part of Japan. Causes brown leaf spot of Solomon's seal and is thought to be isolated from other Polygonatum plants. Produces pycnidia on the leaves and disperses by scattering pycnidiospores inside. Teleomorph, Guinardia reticulata (DC. ex Fr.) van der Aa, not yet discovered in Japan.

 Anamorph: Pycnidia dark brown to blackish brown,  subspherical, producing many pycnidiodpores inside. Pycnidiospores hyaline, broad ellipsoid to obovate, single celled, 10.7-18.7 x 5.3-13.3 um, with  a appendage of 5.3-16 um long at the tip.
