Japanese Fungi on Plants No.62 before next top

Sphaerellopsis filum (Biv.-Bern. ex Fr.) Sutton [=Darluca filum (Biv.-Bern. ex Fr.) Berk.] 
Classification: Deuteromycotina, Coelomycetes

 Distributed widely in Japan and known as a hyperparasite of rust fungi. Because it produces pycnidia mainly in uredinia on various plants and restrain disease progress, the fungus sometimes used as an agent for biocontrol. Produces pycnidia in rust sori and disperses by scattering pycnidiospores inside. Teleomorph is Eudarluca caricis (Fr.) Eriks., but not yet reported in Japan.

 Anamorph: Pycnidia dark brown to black, spherical, ostiolate, produced in rust sori. Pycnidiospores hyaline to pale yellow, fusoid to ellipsoid, 2-celled, 17-20 x 5.5-6.5 um, with short bristle-like appendages at both ends.
