NARO aims to strengthen partnerships and collaborations with international organisations to promote various research initiatives in agriculture, food and the environment. As part of this effort, the International Relations Office is assigned to consolidate various global initiatives such as fostering international partnerships for collaborations, exchange of researchers and other programs, organise symposiums and workshops, and exploring opportunities to promote Japanese agricultural products in the world market.

NARO is actively developing international partnerships with overseas research institutes in the Asian region and European countries, and research institutes under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) through the conclusion of memorandum of understanding (MOU) on comprehensive research cooperation. NARO holds symposiums, seminars and workshops with major collaborating institutes to promote interactions among researchers and to encourage substantial discussions on major issues facing the research initiatives on agriculture, food and the environment. The International Peer Review Program is organized to facilitate external evaluation on the quality and direction of specific NARO research programs.

NARO concluded MOU with Thailand's NSTDA)

NARO concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand. The major thrust of the MOU is to promote R&D collaboration in agriculture and food science in both Japan and Thailand. MOU for deployment of a liaison scientist

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) to facilitate the deployment of NARO liaison scientist (contact researcher) to Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands was signed between NARO and WUR in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Tokyo, Japan on November 21, 2017. The MOU will further strengthen collaboration and will facilitate mutual access to state-of-the-art technological information and strengthen collaboration between these two research organizations. This is the first case for NARO to deploy a research staff overseas. A close cooperation with WUR, which ranks first among international universities in the field of agricultural sciences, is expected to boost research innovations at NARO. Read more

FFTC and NARO signed MOU

The Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) for the Asian and Pacific Region and NARO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote cooperation in the areas of agriculture and facilitate the dissemination of information on scientific, technical and economic matters concerning agriculture through organizing joint conferences, seminars, training courses and lectures. The MOU was signed by FFTC Director, Dr. Kuo-Ching Lin and NARO Senior Vice-President, Dr. Akihiro Sasaki, in a ceremony held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center on October 3, 2017.

Visit to Rural Development Administration (RDA) in Korea

A delegation from NARO headed by Dr. Takeshi Nagai visited the Rural Development Administration(RDA) in Korea on September 18-22, 2017 in order to get an overview of the trends in Korean research institutions. They visited the Department of Southern Area Crop Science of National Institute of Crop Science, International Cooperation Agency, National Institute of Agricultural Science, National Institute of Crop Science, National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, National Institute of Animal Science and the Department of Central Area Crop Science of National Institute of Crop Science. We discussed about the possibility of international collaborative research with NARO and selection of issues.

NARO International Researchers Forum 2017

The NARO International Researchers Forum 2017 was held on September 5, 2017 at the NARO Headquarters in order to evaluate and strengthen the support system for international researchers, to gather opinions among researchers and trainees, to contribute in the effort of increasing the number of foreign researchers, and to establish a network among researchers. Senior researchers including Dr. Dong-hyuk Ahn (NIVFS), Dr. David S. Sprague (NIAES), Dr. Baltazar A. Antonio (NARO Headquarters), Dr. Zabelina Valeria (NIAS) and Dr. Marco Stoic (NILGS) gave short talks on their research areas and motivations for pursuing research in Japan.

Japan-Israel Cooperation in Agricultural Research 2017 Pilot Projects

The National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) is implementing 4 research projects in collaboration with Israel's Agricultural Research Organization (ARO) as part of the "Japan-Israel Cooperation in Agricultural Research 2017" which has been established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MOARD) of Israel. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was concluded between NARO and ARO in March 2017. The research collaboration focusing on "crop irrigation technologies and practices with water of different qualities and its environmental effects" will be conducted by NARO's Institute of Vegetable and Floriculture Science (NIVFS) and Institute of Agricultural Machinery (IAM) and ARO's Institute of Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences. CIAT and NARO signed MOU

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and NARO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote research cooperation between CIAT and NARO in various fields encompassing agrotechnology, technological innovations, food science, environmental science, and social sciences. The MOU was signed by CIAT Director General, Dr. Ruben Echeverria And NARO President, Dr. Tokio Imbe on April 10, 2017.

Israel ARO and NARO signed MOU

The Agriculture Research Organization of Israel (ARO) and NARO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote research cooperation between ARO and NARO focusing on crop irrigation technologies and practices with water of different qualities and its environmental effects. The MOU was signed on March 7, 2017.
