NARO-MARCO International Symposium

Soil C sequestration in agricultural land has been paid great attention due to its potential to achieve both soil fertility build-up and climate change mitigation at the same time. Upon the announcement of "4 per 1000" initiative during COP21 in Paris (Dec, 2015), soil C in agricultural land became an important agenda for both scientists and policy makers.

Facing such political and physical climate changes, we plan a symposium to better understand the research bases and needs in monsoon Asia and to explore future possibilities. A focus will be given to long-term agricultural field experiments present in Asia as its power to examine long-term changes in soil C upon agricultural management options.

The goal of this symposium is to enhance research, research cooperation, and collaboration on soil carbon and greenhouse gas mitigation in agricultural systems across Asian countries and beyond, in conjunction with the 4 per 1000 initiative. As a step towards achieving this goal, we aim to establish a research network of long-term agricultural field experiments among Asian countries.
