In Pre-breeding Group, we develop evaluation and selection methods for developing the breeding materials with new and distinctive traits in rice and vegetables.
Towards the development of rice cultivars
Improvement of seedling vigor under cold stress will contribute to development of new cultivars better suited to direct seeding. So far we have succeeded in greatly improving seedling vigor under cold stress by genetically enhancing "low temperature insensitivity" in rice.
Towards the development of vegetable cultivars
In order to improve storability of pumpkin cultivars, we develop a selection index relating to sugar metabolism system. In onion, we develop effective selection methods for the bulb shape by clarifying the mechanism controlling bulb development.
