Project Promotion Section

The Research Center of Genetic Resources is the main organization of NARO Genebank Project to preserve genetic resources of plants, animals and microorganisms of agricultural importance. Various genetic resources are managed in collaboration with a network of other participants throughout Japan.
The project promotion section and administration team have a role of secretariat of the NARO Genebank Project and are responsible for acceptance, preservation and distribution of the genetic resources and their information management. In addition, both sections have a charge of liaison with other research centers, universities, botanical gardens, etc. which participates the NARO Genebank Project.

The NARO Genebank Project holds over 220,000 accessions of plant genetic resources. Genetic resource is stored for security in two facilities, namely medium term storage room for active collection and long term storage room for base collection. The medium term storage and long term storage rooms have been kept at room temperature -1°C, humidity 30%, and -18°C, 30%, respectively.

In the distribution of genetic resources, about ten thousand points per year are requested from the institutes and universities around the world as a material for research and education.
