The fertility of cattle is declined worldwide and this decrease in reproductive output has correctly been considered multifactorial, with factors including anovulatory and behavioral anestrus (failure to cycle and display estrus), suboptimal and irregular estrous cyclicity, abnormal preimplantation embryo development (early embryonic mortality), and uterine/placental incompetence. Furthermore, reduced conception rate has been also considered to result from various problems, such as infertility by the poor timing of insemination and early embryonic mortality by the deterioration of uterine environment. Thus, multidisciplinary approaches for the diagnosis and treatment are required. In addition, such reproductive failures can be discovered early enough and treated promptly when the wearable wireless sensor and information communication technology (ICT) are applied for individual management of livestock.
The major objectives of the Theriogenology Unit are: (1) to elucidate the pathophysiology of reproductive failure that results from uterine anomalies and to establish the procedure for recovery of uterine function by the development of a new evaluation method, and (2) to establish the system for accurate reproductive management and prevention of reproductive failure using wearable wireless sensor system.
