Cucurbitaceous Vegetables and Strawberry Breeding Unit

Viral and fungal diseases are serious problems in the production areas of important cucurbitaceous vegetables such as cucumber and melon. We are therefore trying to develop DNA markers which can promote breeding of cucumber and melon for resistance to the diseases. We are also trying to develop a parental line of melon with resistance to Cucurbit chlorotic yellow virus (CCYV), a cucumber cultivar with resistance to Melon yellow spot virus (MYSV), and a parthenocarpic parental line of melon which can save labor and costs for pollination.

In strawberry, we aim to realize the stable and high yield production, and we are developing cultivars suitable for cultivation in plant factories and cultivars with enhanced transportability for the purpose of exporting the domestically produced strawberries which boast high fruit quality. Therefore, in order to develop these improved cultivars, we will develop excellent parental lines of strawberry.
