Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, NARO

Message

The Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, NARO (NIAES) made a fresh start as one of the primary research institutes of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) in April 1, 2016 in conjunction with the integration of NARO, National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences, National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, and National Center for Seeds and Seedlings.

In recent years, the impact of climate change on agriculture such as damage to crops by high temperature is gradually becoming more intense. In addition, the environment surrounding the agricultural and rural areas has greatly changed, because of the continuing decrease in agricultural labor force, increase in abandoned farmlands, and increase in the dispersed farmlands in the large-scale management farming bodies. Therefore, it is important to pursue research topics that will ensure passing a productive agricultural and rural environment to the next generation.

Under these circumstances, we perform the research on climate change; prediction of impact in agriculture due to global warming, establishment of a decision support system for crop management that can flexibly respond to climate change, and development of greenhouse gas emission reduction technology from agricultural fields. We also establish an impact assessment method, which can show the influences of the changes in the environment, farmland, and crops and cultivation systems, in the soil and water quality as well as biogeochemical cycles to contribute to sustainable agriculture. Further, we develop an evaluation method of ecosystem services and an impact assessment plan of invasive alien species and pesticides in the agricultural ecosystem. Moreover, we work on the prediction of environmental fate of pesticides and develop crop residue reduction techniques of chemical substances. In addition, we advance the spatio-temporal monitoring technology of agricultural environment by installing remote sensing and geographic information systems while developing the analysis techniques for obtaining wide range agricultural information as well as integrating the database of agro-environmental information.

In order to transfer our research achievements to agricultural sectors, it is essential to collaborate with administrations prefectural agricultural research institutions, extension organization, farmers, private sector, and universities. We also cooperate with the international framework, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) , and the Intergovernmental science on biodiversity and ecosystem services (IPBES), to spread our research result overseas. We look forward to your continuous support and cooperation.
