Chemical Analysis Unit

We develop analytical methods to reveal the amounts and chemical forms of hazardous chemicals (eg. As, Cd, synthetic organic chemicals) in agricultural products and environments. For this purpose, we employ advanced analytical instruments, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS), high resolution gas-chromatography mass spectrometers (HR GC-MS), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) etc. Most of the instruments are installed in the Advanced Analysis Center, NARO (NAAC), and all of the members of this research unit cooperate with NAAC. The main research topics of this unit are as follows:

  • Clarify the chemical forms of hazardous chemicals in agricultural products and soil environments, and determine the factors affecting the behavior of the chemicals in the environments;
  • Reduce/remove the risks caused by hazardous chemicals in soils and water;
  • Clarify the behavior of perfluorinated compounds in the environments;
  • Develop simplified, environmental friendly, and/or cost-efficient analytical methods for quantifying hazardous chemicals by applying micro extraction technique, antigen-antibody interactions etc., and validate the efficiency of the developed methods as official analytical methods.
