NARO International Symposium on Topics Surrounding Pollinators

Overview

We humans live with many blessings from the ecosystem. Such blessings received from the ecosystem is called "ecosystem service" and one of them is "pollination service". Bees and wild visiting insects play a role as pollinators of various plants in agriculture and nature for sustainable food production and preservation of nature itself. In recent years, the importance of "pollination service" provided by insects is being recognized.

On the other hand, the circumstances surrounding pollination such as the rapid deterioration of nectar plants both domestically and overseas have become important issues in Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In response to these, the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) is promoting research on evaluation and utilization of pollination services as part of the research program in the 4th Medium-term Plan.

This symposium is held in conjunction with the Bee Summit on Nov 11&12, 2017, and aims to deepen social understanding on sustainable protection and use of insects in pollination. Experts from Japan and overseas will discuss issues related to insect pollinators and pollination service.
