A recombinant caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) p55gag, rp55gag, was used as an antigen in western blot analysis (WB) for the detection of the CAEV antibody. Seven hundred forty-five goat sera were tested by WB using rp55gag (rWB) and the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test, and the results were compared with those of WB using the whole CAEV antigen (wWB). The AGID test and rWB had similar sensitivities (93.3% and 93%, respectively) and similar specificities (96.0% and 96.3%, respectively) compared with wWB. Compared with the AGID test and wWB, rWB has an advantage in the preparation of the antigen. Thus, rWB can be used as a confirmatory test for the presence of the CAEV antibody.
