Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science, NARO

Message

On April 1, 2016, the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science was reorganized as one of the seven research institutes of the National Agriculture and Food research Organization (NARO) and renamed as Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science, NARO (NILGS). We started research and development based on the 4th Medium- and Long-Term Plan with five years as one term. Last year, the former livestock experimental site celebrated its 100th anniversary. Now the name of the organization has also changed, and it marks the beginning of a new era. In the future, NILGS will promote integrated efforts from research and development (R & D) to returning back the achievements to society and will contribute to the sustainable development of agricultural and livestock industry in our country.

The research topics addressed by the NILGS ranges from livestock breeding, cultivation, harvesting/preparation, and grassland use of forage crops, Livestock production (livestock breeding and reproduction, animal metabolism and nutrition, feeding management technology, etc.) the research extends to a wide range such as Meat and dairy products, treatment and use of, targeting various animals from dairy cattle, beef cattle, pigs, chickens to honeybees. In order to meet the challenges of these research initiatives, seven research divisions will pursue and promote these areas of livestock research.

While NILGS faces many challenges such as Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), based on administrative needs and on-site needs, we will accelerate the research and development of livestock technology while strengthening cooperation with other research organizations such as public research institutions, universities, private sectors.

We will strive hard to disseminate and popularize the research results, along with the publication of research papers by means of holding information exchange meetings, symposiums and by distribution of various manuals. Recently, we have organized a consortium with farmers, extension organizations, related organizations, private companies and also working on field demonstration tests. We hope to improve the field research results and deliver useful varieties, technologies and delicious livestock products to the production site and to the people.

Please continue your support and we look forward for your cooperation in the future.
