NFRI researcher received the 2016 JSM Mycotoxins Award

Dr. Yosuke Matsuo, Research Fellow at the Chemical Hazard Unit, Division of Food Safety of the Food Research Institute, NARO (NFRI) received the 2016 Japan Society of Mycotoxicology (JSM) Mycotoxins Award on November 25, 2016. He was awarded for the research paper entitled "Detection of fumonisin C1, C2 and C3 in corn powder by LC - Orbitrap MS".

Overview of Research

The Fusarium fungi are known as plant pathogen infecting cereals such as wheat, barley, and corn, and some of these fungi produce mycotoxins. Among Fusarium mycotoxins, fumonisins include a group of mycotoxins that are typically produced by Fusarium verticillioides and F. proliferatum. It is also known that fumonisins consist four type structures, namely the A-, B-, C- and P- types. As a foundation for retention time of FCs, FCs are eluted slightly earlier than FBs, because FCs are the FBs analogs without terminal C-1 methyl groups. The award is given for this research since it is the first report on simultaneous detection of naturally-occurring FC1, FC2, and FC3 in corn powder.
