Strengthening collaboration with Wageningen University & Research (WUR)

- MOU for deployment of a liaison scientist -

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) to facilitate the deployment of NARO liaison scientist (contact researcher) to Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands was signed between NARO and WUR in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Tokyo, Japan on November 21, 2017. The MOU will further strengthen collaboration and will facilitate mutual access to state-of-the-art technological information and strengthen collaboration between these two research organizations. This is the first case for NARO to deploy a research staff overseas. A close cooperation with WUR, which ranks first among international universities in the field of agricultural sciences, is expected to boost research innovations at NARO.

Background

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is ranked number one worldwide by the QS World University Rankings in the field of agriculture and forestry (ranking by subject) for 2017. WUR located in the heart of the Netherlands Food Valley, which holds the world's second largest crop export value, is engaged in world leading-edge research in cooperation with the industry-academic-government.

NARO has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding Agreement with WUR in 2015 for conducting joint research and joint seminars etc. This time, NARO has decided to deploy a liaison scientist for the first time overseas at the university research center (to be arranged from April next year) to further deepen the cooperative relationship with WUR. In addition to promoting the establishment of network of research collaboration with WUR and the Netherlands, it is also expected to enhance future collaboration with the European Union.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Arjo Rothuis, WUR Account Manager Asia and Mr. Kazumasa Shioya, NARO Vice-President for Research Collaboration during a ceremony which was held in conjunction with the First Japan-Netherlands Dialogue on Agricultural Cooperation.
