Updated:August 22, 2017 (Tuesday)

-Towards efficient and reasonable maintenance management-

The Institute for Rural Engineering, NARO has developed a low-cost and easy method to measure the degradation of agricultural canals after repair work. The cost per measurement is less than about 30% of the conventional method and the required time is about 3 minutes. This method also allows for a wide range of investigations, it is possible to determine the actual condition of deterioration of agricultural canals after repair work and to conduct reasonable maintenance management which was difficult until now.

Overview

  1. Agricultural reinforced concrete open channels, which form the main agricultural canals, deteriorate with the passage of time, and neutralization of alkaline concrete proceeds. For this reason, repair work covering the inner surface of the waterway is important for delaying deterioration and prolonging the life span of agricultural canals. However, the progress of deterioration after repair work has not been surveyed so far and there is no available method for measurement of deterioration.
  2. The Institute for Rural Engineering, NARO has developed the "core bit method" for measurement of deterioration in agricultural canals after repair work. This method can perform low-cost and easy measurement of the progress of degradation after construction. The "core bit method" does not require special equipment and skill, and the measurement cost per place can be in less than about 30% of the conventional method, with a required time of about 3 minutes.
  3. With this method, it is possible to determine the actual condition of deterioration of reinforced concrete open channel for agriculture after repair work. It is also possible to conduct repair work at the necessary places at the right time and to realize more reasonable maintenance management.
