Elucidation of a new mechanism of the Mendelian dominant-recessive interactions between multiple alleles

A joint research of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, NARO Institute of Vegetable and Floriculture Science, Tohoku University, Kobe University, Osaka Kyoiku University and the University of Tokyo revealed for the first time in over 100 years that the Mendelian dominant-recessive interactions between multiple alleles are controlled by polymorphism of small RNAs and their targets. The study based on phenotypic expression of SP11 alleles, which encodes the male determinants of self-incompatibility in Brassica rapa, will be published in the January issue of the journal Nature Plants. Dr. Tomohiro Kakizaki of the Brassicacea Unit, Division of Vegetable Breeding, is the NARO collaborator in this study.
