NARO Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science (NIVTS) responds to the needs of consumers, producers and people involved in the food industry, by developing new varieties and technologies for high-yield, low-cost, stable and environmentally-friendly production and supply of vegetables and tea. Currently, we conduct research in cooperation with the headquarters in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, and 3 other bases. We strive to continue to contribute to a rich and varied dietary life and the health of all Japanese citizens.

Tsukuba Plant Factory
Presented at the G7 Science Ministerial Meeting, Tsukuba
The NIVFS research on innovative production system in greenhouse horticulture for achieving high year-round yield and low-cost production was presented at the exhibition hall of the G7 Science and Technology Ministers' Meeting held in Tsukuba on May 15-17, 2016. The NARO Tsukuba Plant Factory is a high-yield and high-quality production system for greenhouse vegetables with low cost and low carbon to achieve 50% labor saving and 30% yield growth as compared with the current cultivation practices in Japan. The newly developed Ubiquitous Environment Control System (UECS) has been adopted for environment control and is now in operation. So far, the system has been used to evaluate the optimum control methods and environmental conditions for growing tomato, cucumber, paprika etc.
