Frequently diagnosed animal diseases and their management in Uganda

Quite a large number of infectious and non infectious diseases are endemic in Uganda owing to several contributory factors. Diseases of both public health importance (e.g. rabies) and Transboundary animal diseases are diagnosed frequently. Also of importance are diseases transmitted between wild life and domestic animals because of several domestic and wild life interfaces.
In this presentation, major livestock diseases (including ASF, CBPP), zoonosis (particularly rabies) and diseases transmitted from wild life will be reviewed. Information on diagnosis and management of these diseases in Uganda will be included.

Historical caprine q fever outbreak in Malaysia

Q fever can be considered re-emerging disease in Malaysia. 577 cases of Q fever in ruminant included two cases of deer in captivity were reported since 2007 until 2012. First clinical case in human occurred in 31 July 2007 and in animal occurred in June 2007 in northern Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 2266 sera from 108 goat farms were taken for surveillance which involved six states located in the northern and middle zones in Peninsular Malaysia. The prevalence rate was 19.4%. These suggest that C. burnetii infections had been widespread in Malaysia. A total of 197 carcasses from 5 infected goat farms in northern zone were autopsied and revealed necrotic placentitis with diffused white foci with creamy exudates at the edges of the cotyledons and in the intercotyledonary areas. Morphological changes of necrotic placentitis, interstitial pneumonia, hepatitis and nephritis were seen in majority of cases. These lesions were suggestive of acute Q-fever. Acute cases yielded lesions conforming to "doughnut granuloma" while those of the chronic form exhibited chronic inflammation. Out of the total suspected cases, 152 (77.2%) were confirmed as positive of Q-fever based on immunohistochemistry. Thirty placentas and umbilical stalk which were inoculated into 7-day-old SPF eggs appeared to show cloudy chorion with small spotted white foci attached to the chorionic membrane, collapsed blood vessels and the whole fetus showed hemorrhages with opacity of both eyes. Harvested yolk sac were stained with Machiavello and Gimenez stains revealed hazy bluish structures within the cytoplasm of trophoblasts that contained small, red coccobacilli organism attached to the yolk sac, suggestive of C. burnetii. These thirty yolk sac (100%) revealed positive immunohistochemistry. While by touchdown PCR revealed positive at 687bp. Thus, this study demonstrated pertinent lesions of acute and chronic forms of Q-fever which may be beneficial to laboratories without IHC facilities.
