Visit of IITA Director to NIAS

Dr. Nteranya Sanginga, director of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) located in Nigeria, visited NIAS on February 13, 2013. Dr. Sanginga and his delegation were welcomed by the NIAS President, Dr. Teruo Ishige who also gave an overview of the major research activities of the institute. This was followed by a brief discussion on possible research collaborations and partnerships between the two institutes. After the courtesy visit, there was an exchange of information with Dr. Ishimoto, head of the Soybean Applied Genomics Research Unit and Dr. Takeuchi, a senior researcher of the Plant Microbe Interaction Research Unit. Then Dr. Tomooka, head of the Biodiversity Research Unit gave an overview and a short tour of the NIAS Genebank facilities. Dr. Sanginga was in Japan to attend a workshop organized by the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) held on February 12, 2013 and to explore possible collaborations with Japanese research institutes including JIRCAS and NIAS.
