NIAS 30th Foundation Anniversary
In conjunction with the celebration of the 30th foundation anniversary of the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS), a commemorative symposium was held on October 16, 2013 at the Akihabara UDX Conference Hall in Tokyo highlighting the breakthroughs in agrobiotechnology research in the last three decades. Keynote lectures were presented by Dr. Takuji Sasaki (Tokyo Univ. of Agriculture), Dr. Toru Shimada (Tokyo Univ.) and Dr. Mitsuru Miyata (Nikkei Publications). The directors and representatives of the different centers / divisions gave an overview of the current status of the most recent research achievements of NIAS. The major outputs of each research unit were presented in a poster session.
A culture model using a novel collagen vitrigel® membrane chamber.
The group of Toshiaki Takezawa (Animal Immune and Cell Biology Research Unit) has successfully constructed a culture model equivalent to corneal epithelium by culturing human corneal epithelial cells in a novel collagen vitrigel® membrane chamber. The results were published in the Toxicological Sciences journal and widely reported by local as well as international news organizations such as Reuters.
Joint research collaboration with Poland’s Jagiellonian University.
The Rector of Poland’s Jagiellonian University, Prof. Wojciech Nowak visited NIAS on November 15, 2013 and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a 5-year research collaboration in understanding the mechanism of drought tolerance in plants and insects.
The 12th International Wheat Genetics Symposium (IWGS), an annual conference for wheat genetics, genomics, evolution, genetic resources, and breeding for sustainable wheat production, was held on September 8-14, 2013 in Yokohama, Japan with a total of 411 participants from across the world.
Two symposiums were organized by NIAS focusing on the current status in various areas of agrobiological sciences. The symposium on utilization of genome information for next-generation crop breeding was held on October 18, 2013 at Epochal Tsukuba. The other symposium tackled the development of biomedicine from plants and was held on November 11, 2013 at the Akihabara UDX Conference Hall in Tokyo.
Silk Summit in Kumejima.
In collaboration with the Dainippon Silk Foundation and the town of Kumejima, NIAS co-sponsored the Silk Summit 2013 in Kumejima, Okinawa on October 10-11, 2013.
Agrobusiness Creation Fair.
As part of the Agrobusiness Creation Fair held at the Tokyo Big Sight from October 23 to 25, 2013, NIAS presented an exhibit highlighting the utilization of silkworm, development of transgenic plants, and the impact of genome information in breeding.
Tsukuba Science Festival.
The NIAS presented handicraft making using cocoon of silkworm at the annual Tsukuba Science Festival held at Tsukuba Capio on November 9-10, 2013.
Science Agora.
The NIAS joined the 2013 Science Agora held on November 9-10 at Odaiba in Tokyo with an exhibit aimed at increasing public awareness on genetically modified organisms.
