NARO-FFTC-MARCO Symposium 2018: Climate Smart Agriculture for the Small Scale Farmers in the Asian and Pacific Region

NARO-FFTC-MARCO Symposium 2018 on Climate Smart Agriculture for the Small Scale Farmers in the Asian and Pacific Region (Sep. 27-28, 2018, Tsukuba)

Background

In recent years, the environment surrounding the agricultural and rural areas in the Asian Pacific region has greatly changed, because of the continuing decrease in agricultural labor force and aging, a decrease in cultivatable areas, and pressure on small-scale farmers by large scale commercial farms. In particular, the impact of climate change on agriculture, such as damage to crops by extreme weather events as high temperature or flooding, gradually becoming more intense for small-scale farmers (SSFs) with poor agricultural infrastructure which accounts for the majority of the Asian Pacific region. Therefore, it is important to pursue research topics responded to climate change and sustainable agriculture in the Asian Pacific region including Japan, and that will ensure passing a productive agricultural and rich rural environment to the next generation to meet food supply and demand.

Under these circumstances, the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), cosponsored by the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC), will hold a symposium aimed at promoting extensive research and development on environment contributing to climate smart agriculture. The symposium will be organized under the umbrella of the Monsoon Asia Agro-Environmental Research Consortium (MARCO) which is a research cooperation network to promote international cooperation on agricultural environmental research in monsoon Asia region.

Objectives

  • Exchange the status quo of problems and the latest results of studies on agriculture and climate change in monsoon Asia,
  • Construct and disseminate technologies and options for climate smart agriculture which SSFs in the Asian and Pacific region can utilize for open-field cultivation,
  • Discussing the direction of future research and ways to strengthen collaboration for agro-environmental challenges in monsoon Asia.
