Institute of Vegetable and Floriculture Science, NARO

The Institute of Vegetable and Floricultural Science, NARO (NIVFS) conducts basic and applied research to promote the sustainable production of vegetables and ornamental plants. For vegetable crops, our research initiatives include the development of low-cost stable production technology for vegetables suitable for processing and business, development of environment control and cultivation management technology which supports the Next-generation Greenhouse development, breeding of vegetable varieties with excellent traits such as processability and pest resistance, development of environment friendly pest control technology, and the development of new quality evaluation technology for vegetables. For ornamental plants, we are pursuing research towards the breeding of flower varieties with novel characteristics, and the development of technology for the cultivation and distribution of high quality flowers. With these research activities, we will strive hard in order to contribute to the development of Japanese agriculture for the future.
