Two loci that control the development of good color in grape berry skin have been identified.

NARO Institute of Fruit Tree Science (NIFTS) has specified two loci that control the color quality of red and dark purple grape berry skins.

The market value of grapes is affected by their skin color. Grapes that have been exposed to high temperatures at the coloring stage have inferior color. There is high demand for cultivars that develop a good color despite being exposed to high temperatures during ripening.

Color variation in grape skin is mainly determined by the quantity and composition of anthocyanin in the skin. Differences between genotypes in two loci were found to determine grape berry skin color.

Using this discovery, we are developing a DNA marker that can be used to breed new cultivars that develop good grape skin color even when exposed to high temperatures during the ripening stage. We will be able to begin using the marker for breeding purposes within approximately three years.
