Ergot (Claviceps sorghicola and S. sorghi)
Sclerotia (ergot) of white in surface, cow horn-like and 5-10mm in length are produced in panicles in spite of seeds.
Ergot (Claviceps africana)
Honeydew is produced in panicles and the heads look white-powdery. Ergots are not so distinct.
Grain smut
Small grains of grayish white in surface and black powdery inside are produced in panicles in spite of seeds.
Head smut
Black and large sori appears rupturing leaf sheaths, remaining the host vascular tissues.
Gibberella ear rot
Heads and panicles are covered by pink to red mold.
