Background and Objectives:The existence of human life on this earth requires sustainable agro-ecosystems and sound food production. Monsoon Asian countries are generally blessed with well-developed ago-ecosystems with natural biodiversity comprising various species, where paddy fields provide the opportunity for staple food production. However, recently a drastic deterioration of agro-ecosystems has been observed due to global warming, urbanization, pollution by toxic chemicals, or invasion by alien species. Therefore, it is urgent to evaluate the effects of biotic and abiotic environmental changes on useful resources in agro-ecosystems and identify their effective use for sustainable food production in monsoon Asian countries. In this NIAES International Symposium, we have invited distinguished scientists from 10 countries including Japan to discuss major problems associated with agricultural environmentsand sustainable food production in monsoon Asian countries. In this 3-day symposium, we will focus on relevant research activities and utilization of research outcomes towards establishing the policy and international network for agro-environmental research. The symposium consists of 3-distinct activities - (1) symposium and (2) workshops. On the first day, we will have scientific discussions in the main symposium, followed by workshops in the second and third days on four issues - (a) Ecological risk assessment of invasive alien plants, (b) Environmental risk assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), (c) Prediction of rice production variation under global warming, (d) Evaluation of emission and control of greenhouse gases in agro-ecosystems; and finally the field study tour on the fourth day. Details of each day are available in the Program. Program:
